Ft. Monroe Becomes National Monument

May 1, 2011
Today President Obama signed an executive order designating Fort Monroe in Hampton, Va., a National Monument.  The President was joined in the Oval Office today by Rep. Bobby Scott (D-VA) and Hampton Mayor Molly Ward.

WASHINGTON“In the Civil War, Fort Monroe also became a refuge for slaves that were escaping from the South, and helped to create the environment in which Abraham Lincoln was able to sign that document up there — the Emancipation Proclamation,” President Obama as she signed the executive order in the oval office today.

Obama said the National Monument designation for Ft. Monroe would bring millions of dollars to the region and create 3,000 jobs.
