SUPPORTING THE GREATEST SHIPBUILDERS IN THE WORLD
Bobby is proud to represent Newport News and Hampton Roads in Congress, home to the world’s greatest shipbuilders. Bobby is an active member of the Congressional Shipbuilding Caucus and has worked across the aisle to support our Navy and our shipbuilders.
Bobby is committed to increasing ship maintenance availabilities here in Hampton Roads to make sure that our public and private shipyards have predictable and steady work. Bobby is also fighting for robust funding for our nation’s nuclear aircraft carriers and submarines, which are built right here in Newport News.
As chairman of the Education and Labor Committee, Bobby is working to support and expand registered apprenticeship programs to increase the pipeline of skilled workers into the shipbuilding and maritime trades. Towards this goal, Bobby has recently co-authored the National Apprenticeship Act of 2020.
Bobby’s committee is also working to improve occupational safety for our shipbuilders. Bobby helped lead the way to improve the federal beryllium exposure rule for construction and maritime workers. The Trump Administration attempted to roll back these new health standards in June 2017, but Bobby led the fight to ensure that workers were protected from exposure to beryllium, which can cause cancer and other serious diseases.
